What Does the Color of a Rose Mean? | WaterWise Botanicals

I’ve always heard that the color of a rose that you send to someone conveys a meaning, or unspoken message.  I have to admit that the concept is interesting, but I usually just go for the mood of the day and what strikes me as the most beautiful at that particular moment.  However, I was curious, so I checked the internet, only to find several websites to consult and thought that you might find the answers as intriguing as I did!

Red roses are the color for LOVE – romantic, lasting and passionate love.  It also can be for beauty, so if you find someone attractive, red should be your choice.  However, red also signifies courage and respect, making it a color you could choose for a soldier, father, mother, or boss.  OK, now things could be misconstrued if you were privy to the deeper meaning of sending red roses.  Do these mean respect, or do they find me attractive?  Are they in love with me or do they find me courageous?  Well, I for one wouldn’t care; I’d simply enjoy them.  I’ll let you decide for yourself, but I think there could be a great play written with this concept in mind, so let’s continue.

White roses stand for purity or innocence, silence or secrecy, reverence, humility or unity!  So, I guess you could choose white for a young daughter or sister with purity and innocence in mind, however, I guess you could also choose it for a partner in crime, employing the secrecy and silence cue.  I imagine it might be the perfect choice for a husband to choose for his wife if he were feeling humble and trying to regain unity with his estranged spouse.  The plot thickens!

Pink roses get more complicated depending on the shade.  In general, they are for appreciation, grace, happiness or admiration.  However, deep pink symbolizes not only gratitude, but respect.  Obviously they are more serious, while a lighter shade of pink can show sympathy.  It sounds like a pink rose could replace a “Thank You” note, sympathy card, or birthday cake!  Nice…lots of choices.
