Cops missed a chance to avert fatal Staten Island accident

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Just four days before the horrific Great Kills crash that killed one teen and seriously injured several others, police had a chance to lock up the driver said to be at fault, or at least impound his SUV — but they let him go.

Brian Pittsley was involved in another crash on Staten Island on Aug. 25, and he was allowed to drive away, even though he had no insurance and a questionable license plate, the Advance has learned.

The earlier crash happened Aug. 25, about 2:30 p.m., on the 900 block of Targee Street in Concord, according to accident report records obtained by the Advance.

He swerved out of the path of a car that changed lanes in front of him and veered across a front lawn, striking a Nissan Rogue parked in a driveway and pushing it into another vehicle.

Pittsley, 25, was driving a Chevy Suburban, the same make and model as the vehicle that blew through a stop sign and collided with a sedan at the intersection of Hillside Terrace and Hylan Boulevard on Monday night. Although it bore different license plates, an NYPD source confirmed that the VIN, or vehicle identification number, matched.

Monday’s crash killed one of Pittsley’s teenage passengers, Angel Rivera, 18, and injured six others, as well as the young man driving the sedan. Pittsley fled the scene, leaving the dead and wounded behind, police allege, and was ultimately caught after a foot chase in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn the next day.

"I can’t believe this guy! So he’s been on a mission to destruction! I can’t believe this, oh my God!" said Rivera’s aunt, Minerva Sablosky, who had custody of the teen while his mother lived overseas.

Sausen Silmi, the owner of one of the parked vehicles on Targee, when contacted by the Advance for comment, questioned why police hadn't arrested Pittsley or impounded the vehicle.

"Isn’t this what you would call divine intervention? We had a warning," she said. "What a warning! ... If they had impounded the car, the guy wouldn’t have been driving.
