Yost Soldiers on After Our Monster Quake

Yes, Greensboro, that was an earthquake.

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck Mineral, Virginia, about 208 miles north of Greensboro, shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 23.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) is reporting the quake was centered at a depth of 4.6 miles and is likely the largest quake to originate in Virginia since 1897 …

The USGS said aftershocks could be expected. The US Weather Service said no tsunami is expected.

– Lisa M. Bouchey, Rhino Times website, Tuesday, August 23

Well, Tuesday afternoon, a few minutes before 2 p.m., I was just about to hand in my column. I was almost done with it; I just needed to clean it up a little and then it would be ready.

I was at The Rhinoceros Times office, and I was also polishing up another story to turn in as well, and, then – bam, out of nowhere, the walls of the building began shaking, I could feel the floor moving below me, and everything in the room was rattling –

Earthquake!!

It was the first earthquake I've ever been in.

After all the commotion died down, I could hear the women in the office hallway, and they were asking what in the world was going on. But I knew already.

Earthquake!

The column I had been working on for this week – the one that you would be reading if we hadn't been hit by the worst earthquake to hit this city in over a century – was going to be on how, as a rule, we aren't afraid enough of things as we go through our lives.

You know, in the modern world, there are a host of brand new threats every day, threats you never see coming out of left field: The Large Hadron Collider black hole or brain cancer from cell phones or whatever – anyway, in terms of having the proper amount of fear, evolution hasn't caught up with our modern lives yet.

@ibitchslapu it would have been worse, way more people would have died, the whole country destroyed. would that of been what you would have wanted? some times there has to be civilian casualty. bombing them was the best solution to ending the war with the least civilian casualty. half there population would have committed suicide and many troops would of died. and let me say they where the aggressors and not the attacked.
