Freedom Tree stands tall so we'll never forget

On the first anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, students at W.J. Murphy Elementary School in Round Lake Park gathered on the school’s front lawn to plant a sunset maple tree.

Purchased from Perricone Garden Center & Nursery in Volo with some $1,300 raised from the sale of candy, the maple, already some two stories tall, was given a name: the Freedom Tree.

As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approached this week, first-grade teacher Christa Molidor, who spearheaded the Freedom Tree project, realized that something was missing from the display — a dedication plaque that had been placed near the site. Without it, she said, her first graders — all born a few years after 9/11 — probably wouldn’t know its significance.

“We did have a marker made, but when we put it out there, people would move it,” she said. “We need to get it back out there, because it’s an American day, you know? We have to help them remember.”

Along with the physical reminders, the living history of those who went to New York City to lend a hand in the days and weeks after the Towers fell also recalls a time when the nation came together to heal wounds that struck us all.

First there were those who hoped to save lives and ended up only being able to mourn them. When the hijacked planes began hitting their targets around 9:45 a.m. Central time, personnel at the Waukegan Fire Department were, in the words of firefighter/paramedic Jon Nordgren, “ready to pile in a truck and roll out there.”

“When it happened,” Nordgren said when recounting his experiences earlier this week, “we were calling people we knew in New York, saying, ‘What should we do?’ And they said, ‘Don’t come out — the (Holland) Tunnel is a mess, you’re just going to add to the chaos.’”

Days would pass before Waukegan firefighters could make it east. While waiting, the department went out to local intersections, launching a “Pass the Boot” campaign that ended up collecting $78,000 for the FDNY 9/11 Disaster Relief Fund.
