I've been watching the discussion this week on my blog, Facebook, and Love Is An Orientation (with guest blogger Dan Brennan) about sacred friendships. Several people have expressed the belief that having deep friendships--particularly cross-gender--somehow takes away from the intimacy and depth of a marriage. It's as if they believe that if you love a friend deeply, then you have less love to share with your spouse. Or that somehow intense friendships infringe on the exclusivity and specialness of marriage.

It's time. There are some things I've been wanting to blog about for years, things that are important to me, but I have held back. I've been silent. I've tried and tried to find other things to blog about, things that are benign, that are cute, funny, entertaining. But I sit down to blog and the self-censor kicks in. "Oh, you can't say THAT! You'll make people mad!" or "If your readers knew that's how you really think, they'd never read you again." I suppose it's not that unusual to feel this way, but I've always worried that if you REALLY knew me, you'd be scandalized. So I haven't blogged.
