Conference clashes highlight prep gridiron action

Defending state champion West earned its second CIC win with a 39-13 win over Eagle River at Anchorage Football Stadium, and East thumped Dimond 25-12 to deny the Lynx their second CIC win.

Wasilla handed first-place Juneau its first loss of the season, knocking off the Crimson Bears 53-33 in a home game. West Valley took over first place in the RC with a 62-38 victory at North Pole. In the third RC match up of the night, Palmer started its game with a kickoff return for a touchdown and proceeded to run over Lathrop 70-6, for its first RC win.

South traveled to Auburn, California to face Placer High, but the trip turned sour quickly in a 65-40 loss. The Wolverines gave up four first-half touchdowns to Placer running back Joe Mangino, two of which came before the midway point of the first quarter, giving Placer a 14-0 lead. The Hillmen built a 23-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

South's biggest highlights both came on turnovers. Dante Williams returned a fumble for a touchdown in the second half, and Michael Wilson intercepted a Placer pass and returned it about 30 yards to set up the Wolverines' first score, a 1-yard run from Tommy Hopp, who converted a two-point conversion to make the score 23-8 in the second quarter.

Placer kept pounding South with the running game, however, and built a 36-8 halftime lead. The Wolverines didn't give up, coming back to score 32 second-half points, finishing the game with a scoring drive that ended with a Zach Lujan touchdown pass with four seconds remaining.

It took West until the second quarter to strike for a touchdown against Eagle River. Conor Feckley fired a 51-yard touchdown pass to Larmarr Brown, immediately following a Desmond Corpuz interception of Eagle River quarterback Peter Kott. A Tom Troxel kick followed the bomb and gave West a 7-0 lead.

Wrestling Preparing for 2011-12 Season with 11 Roster Additions ...

2011-12 Sun Devil Schedule

TEMPE – Back in March, the spotlight exploded on the Arizona State University wrestling program as both Anthony Robles (125) and Bubba Jenkins (157) captured individual NCAA titles for Head Coach Shawn Charles’ program, the Sun Devils finished sixth nationally as a team and had three All-Americans, including Levi Cooper (heavyweight). But, with September on the horizon and the team’s successful previous season finishing more than five months, the current Sun Devil roster is set to get back to work by building on the success found in 2010-11 and translate that into a continued resurgence in 2011-12.

With Cooper the lone returning All-American following the graduations of both Robles and Jenkins, the Sun Devils will rely on a youthful line-up in 2011-12 that will feature several redshirted freshmen that are already highly regarded nationally (that class was among the Top 10 recruiting classes last year) as well as several returning upperclassmen, including Pac-10 champion Jake Meredith (184) and fellow returning NCAA participants Eric Starks (174) and Luke Macchiaroli (197). While the upper weights appear to remain in tact from last year, the questions will come at the lightest weights this season.

Heading into the season, 11 newcomers have joined the program, including eight true freshmen and three transfers. Combined, this group collected three National Junior College (NJCAA) individual titles and 23 total state crowns. Transfers Victor De Jesus (Lowell, Mass./Iowa Lakes CC) was a two-time national champion at 149 while P.J. Starnes (Schaumburg, Ill./Harper College) won the 157 title last year. Add to that four-time state champions Kory DeBerry (Tucson, Ariz./Sunnyside HS) and Mat Malnoske (Anchorage, Alaska/East Anchorage HS) and three-time winners Jake Gentzler (Andover, Kan./Andover Central HS), Jacob Graham (Phoenix/Thunderbird HS) and Preston McCalmon (Lafayette, Ga./Lafayette HS), and the Sun Devils appear to have added yet another talented group that will look to help the program continue its push to return to the top of the Pac-12 Conference, as well as the NCAA standings.
