Saturday: The Autumn Run for Autism 5K race starts at 7:30 a.m. at Silver Springs, 5656 E. Silver Springs Blvd., Silver Springs. Saturday: Bras for a Cause, an Ocala Oncology Center fundraiser to support the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, runs 6 to 10 p.m. at Ocala Art in the Park, 40 SW First Ave., Ocala. For $40, participants can make a unique artistic creation on one of three pre-drawn bras. Registration requested. (229-2044)
Saturday: Ocala's Got Talent starts at 10 a.m. at the Paddock Mall, 3100 SW College Road, Ocala. Camelot Community Care, Paddock Mall and Jenkins Auto Group host this event and are currently seeking participants for the event. Singers, actors, dancers, jugglers, magicians or musicians are needed. The cost is $25. All proceeds will benefit Camelot Community Care and at-risk youth in Marion County. Sept. 19: The Christian 12-Step Ministry of Ocala, an addiction and substance-abuse recovery program, will host a fashion show and luncheon at noon at Oak Run Country Club, 10983 SW 89th Ave., Ocala. Five Virginians, including three former champions VSGA, compete in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship this week female, 10 to 15 September in Honors courses in Chattanooga, Tennessee
The Commonwealth contingent includes former VSGA Amateur champion wife Amy Ellertson of Free Union (near Charlottesville) and past winners Senior Women's Amateur Boode McGurn (2004 and 2009) and Natalie Easterly (2008) of Richmond. McGurn was a quarterfinalist at the 2008 Amateur Championship USGA Senior Women's Country Club Tulsa (Oklahoma).
Fill in the representation of Virginia player in the national championship are northern Virginia Arline Hoffman of Alexandria (pictured right), in stroke play medalist and a quarterfinalist at the VSGA Senior Amateur Championship this summer and the female center of Virginia Kitusky Joanne (Glen Allen), the qualifying medalist in women of Richmond Golf Association Amateur Championship and Women's Amateur runner-up to last year RWGA woman.
Each competitor has reached the national championship through the qualification. Ellertson, the 1994 and 1995 VSGA Women’s Amateur champion and a four-time participant in the USGA Women’s State Team Championship, qualified at Bentwoods Golf and Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, N.C. Easterly, Hoffman and Kitusky reached the national championship after qualifying at Argyle Country Club in Silver Spring, Md., while McGurn qualified at the Country Club of Fairfield (Conn.).
At the national championship, the starting field of 132 players will play two rounds of stroke play (Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11), with the low 64 scorers advancing to match play. The first round of match play is set for Monday, Sept. 12, followed by the second and third rounds on Tuesday, Sept. 13 before the quarterfinals and semifinals on Wednesday, Sept. 14. The scheduled 18-hole final is scheduled to be conducted on Thursday, Sept. 15.
