Kraken monster ruled ancient seas? Scientists wary of new theory.

Dr McMenamin, who teaches at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, presented its proposal at a Geological Society of America conference in Minneapolis on Monday. He came with body armor in tow.

"We are ready for it. We have a very good case, "he said.

The period of this creature would have inhabited proposed long fascinated scientists. Known as the Triassic period, it lasted about 50 million years. He started at the end of the extinction of the planet's most massive of some 251 million years. Researchers estimate that some 96 percent of all marine species and 70 percent of land-based creatures vanished. It ended in another mass extinction, one that would lead to the rise of the dinosarus.

The Triassic "is a time when modern ecosystems come into being," says Hans-Dieter Sues , curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History . "Almost every group that today is dominant in the world's oceans or on land had either its first appearance in the Triassic or some of its closest relatives first showed up."

One of the period's iconic creatures: large sharp-toothed fish known as ichthyosaurs. One member in particular, Shonisaurus popularis, grew to lengths of up to 50 feet. Nevada's Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park boasts nine fossils of these giants, all bunched in the same general location.

At issue is whether the assembly represents animals who died in a shallow ocean from a mass stranding or an explosive algae bloom, or whether the formation was in the deep sea. Some recent geological analysis has suggested the deep-sea location – the modern-day battleground for sperm whales and their prey, giant squid.

Enter McMenamin and the kraken. A unique pattern of vertebra caught his attention – two rows, neatly set side by side in a manner that make them look nested. Moreover, the bones were scarred in ways that indicated the animals died at different times.

The oceans are full of some real monsters of the sea life ... there is certainly more than the 13 listed below! Perhaps some of these ideas will inspire creative Halloween costume. 1.Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni

This deep sea shark is believed to be widely distributed geographically, but only a very small amount was never captured. Their depth range is from 30 to 1300 meters. Their maximum length is 617 cm (20 feet).

Identified by its long snout, flat and pink. They have very small eyes, a long tail fin, and a jaw protrusion. They have been known to feed on squid and crabs. The body shape suggests that it is slow moving shark, which makes it stand out from other members of the Order Lamniformes.It is difficult to believe that this strange looking creature is a close relative of sharks such as mako and great white.

The ghost crab of the Atlantic is about 2 inches in diameter and white sand. The range of these crabs is from Rhode Island to Brazil. They prefer sandy beaches and can be best seen at night due to the fact that they are primarily nocturnal. Ghost crabs are opportunistic and their diet consists mainly of small marine animals that wash up dead (clams, crabs, mole, etc. ...).They were also known to eat young turtles feed and deposition of algae that is mixed with sand.

There are over 20 species of ghost crabs scattered around the world. Ghost crabs have very few predators and the threat No. 1 to their survival is habitat destruction caused by humans, such as beach erosion, traffic, oil spills and pollutants.
