Family of butchers reminisce at big birthday bash

JOSEPH and Emily Hammond owned the first butcher’s shop on the North Shore.

But they left a lasting family legacy through having 12 children.

Recently, many of the descendants of their second-youngest son Harold “Nipper” Hammond got together for a birthday at Manly, where about 80 people attended.

One of Harold’s grandsons, Mark Hammond, 61, was there who has been tracing the family’s history.

“In retirement I looked at the old records of my father, Alby, and found some 100-year-old documents,” he said.

Mr Hammond is a retired Qantas engineer, and now lives at Asquith.

But as a boy he lived close to his grandfather’s Pymble homestead and remembers how the family would regularly get together for Sunday dinners.

He also has childhood memories of helping out with the family butcher’s business.

“I remember going to the Pymble property every Sunday, because that was where Harold and (his wife) Clara lived, “A lot of “Nipper’s” children lived around there,” he said, adding that some who lived close by were still involved in the business.

Harold was one of the four brothers involved in Hammond Bros, after their father had established the Joseph Hammond butcher business.

Mr Hammond’s father Albert (Alby) was one of Harold and Clara’s 11 children, and also a butcher. Alby and his cousin Leo worked in the Roseville shop, while Alby’s brother Norm and his cousin Jack worked in the Chatswood shop.

“Dad and my eldest brother used to deliver meat by horse and cart,” Mr Hammond said.

Hammond Reserve in Pymble was renamed after Harold “Nipper” Hammond in 2007.

DOWN TO BUSINESS IN THE NORTH * JOSEPH HAMMOND established his first butcher’s shop in 1868 at North Sydney and Ku-ring-gai’s first abattoir at the Pymble site in 1900 which was operated by his son Harold. The site remained in the family until being transferred to the Commonwealth of Australia in 1953. The Hammonds owned a thriving butcher’s business until 1960s, at a time when the family butcher still made home deliveries.

Recent research indicates that the real estate market in Sydney remains expensive when compared to other areas throughout Australia. In terms of more moderate housing, many agents throughout the Sydney area are looking to Erskineville as the suburb to watch. Prices are still manageable for many families and the area shows excellent opportunity for capital growth and rental yield. The population in the area is growing and all indicators are that the housing throughout the suburb is likely a good investment.

While some are looking to rent or purchase in an area that is already found to be pricy and prestigious, others are seeking areas thought to be more of a hidden gem. Some would say Darlinghurst, for example, is an area to explore since it is often overshadowed by Surry Hills. Redfern is another area that is often being thought of in the same regard. Surry Hills is becoming a very popular area with its urban living and convenient selection of restaurants and bars.
