Update on Early Morning Traffic Fatality in Southeast Portland

As the vehicle passed, the officer saw that it was a black 1993 Chevrolet Corvette that the officer had taken a stolen car report on earlier in the evening.

The officer began to turn around to initiate a traffic stop but the driver of the Corvette immediately lost control of the car as it crossed Powell Boulevard. The Corvette struck a parked Toyota truck on the east side of SE 112th Avenue, then crashed through a wooden fence and continued through the front yard of a residence, ultimately hitting a Ford Explorer that was parked in the driveway. The Corvette continued moving, now backwards, and hit a large cargo van parked in the side yard of another residence. The impact moved this large van about 5 feet, pushing it into a Buick parked in the driveway of this residence, where the Corvette finally stopped.

Additional officers arrived in the area along with medical personnel who determined that the driver was deceased. The driver, 35-year-old male, had warrants for burglary and a parole violation and had been convicted of 7 felony and 3 misdemeanor crimes, including Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle (stolen car) and Attempt to Elude.

The deceased man’s identity will be released after family has been notified.

The Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division’s Major Crash Team conducted an investigation into the crash.

The intersection of Southeast 112th Avenue and Powell Boulevard was shut down for several hours in all directions as investigators processed the crash scene. The intersection was reopened at approximately 5:00 a.m.

This was the 4th traffic fatality in the past week and the 28th in 2011.

Monday afternoon pedestrian accident claims life of White City man ...

A semi-truck struck and killed a 55-year-old pedestrian in a White City crosswalk Monday. The fatal pedestrian accident was first reported to authorities just after 1:15 p.m. The accident victim was reportedly walking north on Highway 62 toward a White City restaurant. The street the pedestrian was crossing turns into Highway 140 on the east side of the intersection where the fatal accident occurred.

Oregon State Police say a commercial truck was traveling east and preparing to make a right hand turn onto Highway 62 just before the accident. The intersection is controlled by traffic lights and authorities have not determined who had the right of way at the crosswalk at the time of the accident.

Emergency responders closed Highway 62 to one lane after the crash to conduct an investigation. The highway closure helps to preserve evidence at the accident scene.

The street where the accident occurred is heavily travelled by commercial vehicles. The street is one of several roads that connect Highway 140 to Interstate 5 in the White City-Central Point area. Bystanders told the Mail Tribune the intersection is dangerous for pedestrians with the high volume commercial vehicle traffic.

One witness says she saw a man standing at the intersection before the fatal pedestrian accident occurred, but she apparently did not witness the fatal collision. She told the Mail Tribune that roughly 10 minutes after she saw a man at the intersection, she saw him lying in the road. The OSP reportedly took statements from three witnesses after the pedestrian accident.

One White City resident told the newspaper that the traffic signals at the intersection do not have arrows controlling left and right-hand turns onto highway 62.

The accident remains under investigation.
