Cape Fear Profile: Lynn Pryer is the heart of the Gilbert Theater
On a recent evening at the Gilbert Theater, artistic director Lynn Pryer juggles rehearsals for two productions at the same time.
On stage, the cast of "The Rocky Horror Show" rehearses a song for the season's first production. In the lobby, another group of actors prepares for the Gilbert's next installment of a monthly radio show.
Pryer sits behind a cloth-covered desk that's cluttered with piles of scripts and note-filled pads. Glasses in one hand, a pencil in the other, Pryer leans back and addresses the quintet of radio actors.
"Did everyone get a chance to read?" he asks.
The cast members nod "yes." When Pryer had left the room earlier to check on the "Rocky Horror" cast, the radio cast members had divided up the parts.
"This just proves things will be fine without me," Pryer says.
The statement elicits a halfhearted laugh from the cast. It's taboo to talk about Pryer's retirement, which will come in July at the end of the theater's 2011-12 season.
An awkward silence fills the room as Pryer allows himself a moment of reflection, his gaze taking in the lobby's contents - photos, awards, autographs, posters and mementos from the Gilbert's history.
In 1994, Pryer founded the Gilbert Theater in the basement of his historic Haymount home on Brandts Lane. The Gilbert, which has since moved above Fascinate-U Children's Museum downtown, has offered provocative plays and opportunities for actors and playwrights.
But after 20 years in Fayetteville, Pryer is returning to his home state of California, leaving a gap in the arts community that some say won't be easy to fill.
"I can't believe he's leaving," says longtime friend and Gilbert Theater patron Sharon Valentine. "We are all going to experience a hole in our universe that really can't be filled."
Valentine says the Gilbert offers intellectually stimulating productions that perhaps would not be found in a community the size of Fayetteville. They include plays such as "The Vagina Monologues," "In the Blood," "Exits and Entrances," "The Blue Room" and "The Laramie Project.
