Readers offer reflections on 9/11

Laura Brown, 47, of Denver and a former former Corvallis resident

I remember being in my bedroom getting ready for work in the S.F. Bay Area when the first plane hit in N.Y. By the time I was out the door and down the street, the second plane hit and I knew it was going to be ugly.

I was in Oklahoma when the Murrah Building was bombed and it all came flooding back with the pictures and sounds of the buildings collapsing that were played endlessly in the days after 9/11. I knew people in the Murrah Building. They all just happened to be out in the field when the bombing happened but what a nightmare, and it all came back to me in the days and months following the bombing.

How 9/11 has changed my life is in the infringements on my civil rights and freedoms. Flying, entering concerts and other venues has become an exercise in swallowing civil rights violations. Giving up my freedoms in the name of a false sense of security is very much not what I expect from my country.

Rita Hanscomm, 65 of Corvallis

On Sept. 11, 2001, I was living alone in the Heartland of America, thousands of miles from my adult children in Oregon and one mile from the Oklahoma City bombing site, where  our world changed and our hearts beat louder than they ever had before.

I was in the process of being taught by Oklahoma folks’ example of the strongholds of family love needed for enduring threats we faced then. These threats were a thing to keep away from our purpose to live life fully and to not allow terror to hinder our trust in God.

Six years after the bombing in OKC, America lived the reality of the 9/11 heartbreak. I remember feeling thankful for family and the gift of life itself. I knew then that one cannot rely on money only to survive the years God keeps giving us in America.

Arrival on the Brooklyn side brought Orthodox Jews bearing water, towels and the offer of a chance to rest in a storefront. The National Guard were out in force, patrolling the streets. It would take me 22 miles and many hours to get home.

How far is too far to commute to weekend college? | College Ad Board

I attend a school that offers weekend courses. The school is 70 miles away (a little over an hour without traffic). The classes are Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and all day Sunday. The good thing is that I only have to go once every 3 weekends. The question is should I commute back and forth making a total of 6 trips for the weekend (420 miles)? Or should I stay in a hotel near the school for 2 nights driving to the school once and back home once?

Best answer:

Answer by Fly B I went to school which was approximately 60 miles away for 3 years of my life. The commute, in typical traffic, was 1h 15min one way. The way home was often in rush hour, taking 1.5 – 2 hours. Had to do it 7 days a week; weekdays for school, weekends for a part time job which covered my gas!

Put on the radio, crank the tunes, lower the window, and enjoy!

Hotels I find get pretty pricey. I would suggest finding out where one is nearby just in case you have an unusually long day and might be unable to drive home; or bad weather. Which reminds me, if really bad weather is forecast perhaps stay in a hotel. I’ve stayed in a hotel two or three times over my 3 years due to either weather, or being far too burnt out to drive + early morning the next day. So, make preparations, but the commute itself shouldn’t be too bad.
