Pet store owner upset over abandoned cats

Debye Rienguette of Debye's Pet World says her operation is not an animal shelter.

It's a business, she explains.

This was her response following her discovery of a box of cats left on her business's doorstep on Friday.

Around 9:40 a.m. she arrived at work and discovered a cardboard microwave box. At first, she thought it was cans left by a customer.

Rienguette says her business collects them for recycling and for an Elliot Lake-based animal rescue and care group.

"So I am just assuming this is a box of pop cans. I go to pick it up and it weighs a ton."

It was then she realized it must contain an animal of some sort. Upon opening the box she found two adult cats and two kittens peering up at her. There was also a note left with the animals requesting a home be found for the cats.

She left the box in the small porch area that separates her business from the outside.

"I can't take a chance of bringing not-fixed or not-vaccinated animals into this population. I mean we have elder resident cats. We need to make sure that whatever comes in has gone through a process. We have kittens here."

Rienguette says her animals are cleaned for fleas, de-wormed and put in quarantine before being introduced to the rest of the population.

The owner called the Elliot Lake municipal pound and had the animals picked up by an animal control officer.

As for her feelings, Rienguette says she is upset over the lack of responsibility someone showed in abandoning these animals.

"I don't need this extra stress."

Every animal that her store takes on for later sale is vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

"I am a business. I don't take a surrender fee, I don't take animals, we are not a shelter. The only way we keep our doors open is by selling merchandise to pet owners."

She says as a business owner she also cannot contact the Society for Animals in Distress (SAD). She must contact Elliot Lake's municipal pound instead. Once the cats were seized by the animal control officer they will be held for three days. This is done to give the animals' owner a chance to claim them.
