Local Roundup: Flag runner wins USA 20k championship

In her first USA Running Circuit race, Flagstaff resident Janet Cherobon-Bawcom won the USA 20k Championships on Sept. 5 in New Haven, Conn. in 1 hour, 8 minutes, 31 seconds, qualifying her for the 2012 Olympic Trials.

"I was very excited," Cherobon-Bawcom told Runnerspace.com . "It was my first championship 20k and I won, so I was pretty pumped about it."

Team USA Arizona athletes Brett Gotcher, Jordan Horn and Emily Harrison also competed in the championships. Gotcher finished fifth in 1 hour, 1 minute and 44 seconds, while Horn finished 18th in 1:04:31. Harrison was ninth in the women's championship with a time of 1:11:05 -- four minutes faster than her 17th place finish in the same race two years ago.

The USA 20k was the 8th of 11 road championships that comprise the USA Running Circuit. The USA Running Circuit standings are currently led by Team USA Arizona's Aaron Braun with 35 points -- two points ahead of Ben True. The women's standings are led by Mammoth Track Club's Jen Rhines with 30 points.

Next up for Team USA Arizona is the USA 5k Championships in Providence, R.I., on Sept. 18 featuring Jordan Horn, Aaron Braun and Kellyn Johnson.

HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY

The Flagstaff Avalanche hockey team beat Pinnacle in overtime Monday to win the 2011 Arizona High School Hockey Association Labor Day Tournament championship in Chandler.

After playing to a 4-4 tie in regulation, Trey Gonzales scored the game-winning goal in overtime to top a tough 4A hockey team. Flagstaff didn't allow a single shot on goal by Pinnacle in the extra period, and Terran Donnelly was credited with the assist on the game winner.

Josh Axler scored twice for the Avalanche and added an assist, while Gavin Fischenich and Miles Lengyel also found the back of the net for Flagstaff.

Alex Holbrook and Jacob Williams also had assists in the win.

On Sunday, Flagstaff topped Horizon, 6-2 on goals from Fischenich, Lengyel (two), Sean Hamblen, Axler and Taylor Martinez.

More Time Needed Before Ketchner Stands Trial | AZ-Independent

 Alleged killer Darrell Ketchner won’t stand trial until more than two years after the July 2009 murder of 18-year-old Ariel Allison and the brutal attack upon her mother. During a Dec. 14 hearing, prosecutor Megan McCoy asked that the death penalty case be set for trial sometime next August.

        McCoy said setting a distant date would give attorneys a target and time line. Defense attorney John Napper, however, told Mohave County Superior Court Judge Rick Williams that he wouldn’t be ready for trial next August.

        “I don’t think that’s a realistic date, your Honor,” Napper said. He explained the defense team is very busy developing mitigation in advance of trial.

        The mitigation, details of Ketchner’s life history, would be offered for sentencing consideration should Ketchner be convicted. Napper said the prominence of Ketchner’s family and his previous criminal history increases the workload of the mitigation effort.

        “It’s just huge,” Napper said.

        McCoy countered that 18 months have already passed since the murder and that completion of the trial is important for the victim’s to heal and gain some closure. “This is a family that has lost a daughter,” McCoy said.

        Judge Williams said he understands that some might think the case should be progressing at a faster pace. Still, he said he recognized that attorneys and investigators are working hard behind the scenes.

        Williams said he didn’t want to “rush things.” He scheduled a Jan. 14 status hearing and said he intended to set a meaningful trial date at that time.

        Williams indicated he would likely set the trial sometime late in 2011.

        Ketchner, 52, pled guilty to one of the lesser counts of his current indictment to gain an exit from the Mohave County jail in favor of prison. He pled guilty to misconduct involving weapons and was given a 15-year prison sentence.
