Jacksonville unemployment rate unchanged in July at 10.4%
Jacksonville's unemployment rate was unchanged in July, with businesses reporting minimal job growth, the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation said Friday.
The jobless rate in the Jacksonville metropolitan area - consisting of Duval, Baker, Clay, Nassau and St. Johns counties - was 10.4 percent last month, the same as the revised unemployment rate for June, the state labor agency said.
Florida's statewide unemployment rate was unchanged in July at a seasonally adjusted 10.7 percent. The labor agency does not provide seasonally adjusted data for the Jacksonville area. But when the data is adjusted for seasonal factors, it shows a slight increase in Jacksonville's unemployment rate from 9.66 percent in June to 9.79 percent in July, according to the University of North Florida's Local Economic Indicators Project.
Jacksonville's seasonally adjusted jobless rate likely rose because of the continued influx of new high school and college graduates entering the workforce for the first time, said UNF economist Paul Mason. That's a normal seasonal trend in the summer. The labor agency's data showed that the number of people in the labor force in Jacksonville - that is, people who have jobs or are actively looking for jobs - grew by about 2,600 last month.
But those people are having trouble finding work. The total number of jobs on local business payrolls has risen by just 4,900 over the past 12 months, a 0.9 percent growth rate.
"Things are not good," said Mason.
"People still are desperate to find employment. Unemployment is way too high," he said.
One job sector that has been growing is leisure and hospitality, which has added 4,600 jobs in the Jacksonville area in the past year, a 7 percent growth rate.
The other major job sector showing significant growth is professional and business services, which has risen by 2,700 jobs, or 3.2 percent.
The biggest job losses have come in financial activities, down 1,300, or 2.4 percent; construction, down 700, or 2.4 percent; and information, down 500, or 4.9 percent.
