GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Prime rib. Roast beef. Barbecued brisket. All-beef hot dog.
It's a limited menu, but that doesn't stop the lines for the Nebraska Cattlemen's Beef Pit from snaking out the door, down the sidewalk and across to the Sheep Barn.
The venerable attraction — 27 years at the Nebraska State Fair — is expected to serve some 25,000 sandwiches by the time the fair closes Monday, likely equaling last year's record-setting pace of a sandwich every 16 seconds.
Valentine, Neb., ranchers Jim and Ginny Lee, standing in a long lunch line last Saturday, said they didn't mind the wait.
"There's nothing better than beef," said Ginny Lee, who said her favorite Beef Pit dish is the brisket.
Rachael Wolfe, 11, was antsy to get to the carnival rides while she stood in line with her grandmother, Barbara Grundmayer of Hastings.
"No-o-o-o!" she said when asked if she thought it was worth waiting for a prime rib sandwich.
"She'd rather have a corn dog," said Grundmayer, a first-time fairgoer who was as eager to try Beef Pit fare as her granddaughter was to hit the midway. The girl was partly mollified when she learned the concession stand also offered hot dogs.
