Hillsboro Daffodil Project seeks thousands more daffodil bulbs
Donated time and 60,000 daffodil bulbs turned a section of U.S. 26 in Hillsboro into a happy place last spring. Volunteers want to make it even happier by planting 12,000 to 15,000 more bulbs along the highway near the Hillsboro Stadium to expand the quarter-mile strip of daffodils. You can help: As you thin your bulbs in the next few weeks, put some aside to add to the show.Arden Sheets, who leads the Daffodil Project, says the wide variety of daffodils planted since the project started in 2006 bloom at different times, giving eight weeks of color. Sheets advises thinning daffodils every few years when there is more foliage than flowers. Gently dig out a clump of bulbs, and separate. If desired, replant some of the larger bulbs several inches deep and several inches apart. Gently brush dirt off bulbs for donation and spread them on newspapers or a rack in a garage or other cool shaded spot. Once bulbs are dry, they are ready for replanting.
Bulbs may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Office, 4400 N.W. 229th Ave. , near the Hillsboro Stadium. Fall planting is tentatively planned for Oct. 1. For more information, contact Sheets at 503-640-2116.
