Tdap North Carolina School Information

Greensboro, NC --  The first day of school offers a lot of rules and regulations students must follow to make it a great year.

Sixth graders also have a state law they must follow.  The state requires all sixth graders receive a Tdap vaccine.  Parents of sixth graders must show their child received a Tdap vaccination for their child to attend class. They have 30 days from the first day of school to show proof of record of immunization.

If not, the child will be suspended from class until proof he or she received the vaccination.

The Guilford County Health Department offered youth vaccination clinics prior to the start of school. Tdap vaccines are offered everday at the health department by appointment.

The Health Department is just one of several locations where children can get immunized.  Some walk-in medical clinics offer the shot as well as private pediatrician offices.

There is no out-of-pocket charge for the vaccine at the health department. They ask you still bring your child's insurance or Medicaid card.

Nationally, about 16 percent of children have some form of disability, including speech and language delays, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and emotional or behavioral problems. Among low-income children, such problems are even more common.

Screening and surveillance can identify developmental and behavioral problems and help children get the services they need. Even for children without problems, screening offers a way for providers to solicit parents' concerns and for families to learn about age-appropriate behavior and development. But screening is not part of routine primary care—only 30 percent of children needing services are identified by the time they begin school.

Earls, M.D., of Guilford Child Health and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and Sherry Shackelford Hay, M.P.A., of the North Carolina Office of Research, Demonstrations, and Rural Health Development, present strategies for integrating developmental screening into pediatric offices. The strategies are drawn from lessons learned in North Carolina, which has developed a comprehensive system to significantly increase screening rates.
