best gas mileage blog - Anyone notice MPG gains after installing ...
I have a 4.3l 4×4 S10 blazer. I am doing mods and seeing how high I can get the miles per gallon. I am wondering if underdrive pulleys would be a worthwhile investment as far as MPG goes. I am not concerned with power since this engine has more than enough power for my needs. If you have personal experience with this please chime in. It would be helpful if you included the vehicle, year and engine with your answer. Thanks.
the under drive pulleys would be counter productive for you. they are used in high reving engines to bring the accessories back to a normal rpm range. if you are not dealing with a ho 350 or any thing like that or an engine that is used to about 6000 rpm, then this would not do you any good. in your situation you would notice stiffer steering, a slower charge to te battery and stuff like that.
Under drive pulleys reduce the “load” on the engine so in that respect it would reduce the amount of fuel needed to perform the same amount of work, but the MPG increase would be very, very slight. Probably measured in only in hundredths of a MPG.
However, if you do a lot of stop and go driving the reduced speed of the water pump may cause over heating problems.
I installed U/D pulleys on both my 2000F-150 w/the 4.6 and my 04 Mustang GT.I installed the Mac pulleys on my truck and the Steeda on my GT.I honestly didnt notice any difference in performance or mpg on either vehicle.I probably would need to strap them to a dyno to really measure any difference in power or performance.Niether vehicle had reduced mpg,but I really enjoy driving both of them,especially the Mustang if there was a difference,I wouldnt have noticed.I dont regret installing the pulleys,I think next time I’ll really look closer at what noticeable performance parts you can really feel in the seat of your pants before I spend my $$.Hope this helped.
