In Idaho State’s 44-7 victory over Western State Saturday afternoon at Holt Arena, fans were treated to an early scoring outburst courtesy of the Bengals.
Quarterback Kevin Yost found wide receiver Rodrick Rumble down the right sideline for a 26-yard touchdown pass just 45 seconds into the game. The two connected again 1:12 later for another score, this one from 51 yards out.
Yost and Rumble combined for a third touchdown, a 15-yarder this time, with 8:29 left in the second quarter.
“We were on track,” Rumble said of the quick start. “I knew we had to surprise them a little bit. I was running fast routes and they were great balls.”
“Rodrick Rumble is a debonair talent and he’s only a junior,” said head coach Mike Kramer. “He is going to be a force to be reckoned with in this conference for a long time. He’s got to continue to work hard and improve because he continues to make some small mistakes that continue to retard his progress. He can be a tremendous, dominant receiver because he has such strong hands and can clear himself in the route and make good catches down the field.”
ISU’s offense found its mojo quickly and the Bengals (1-1) jumped out to a 21-0 lead.
“It was definitely was nice to get into a rhythm and get the offense going,” Yost said. “It felt really good.”
“I think it was just excellent that we were able to execute what we are talking about,” Kramer said about his team’s fast start. “This is nothing new to us because Coach Bailey and I have been doing this for a long time and we know what we’re capable of.”
Brendon Garcia added a 41-yard field goal seconds before the first half ended. ISU took a 24-0 lead into the locker room.
