Remembering a life well lived: A loved one recalls her time with Rich Guadagno
Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, 3000 separate lives - with unique stories, families, passions and personalities - united in a tragic end.
Dique for LaPenta, whose boyfriend, Humboldt Bay Wildlife Director Richard J. Guadagno, 38, was killed that day, it is high time the focus of the nation is mourning the death of victims of violence in the celebration of life dynamic.
"Their death was terrible and they will be a part of history, but they were a tiny fraction of what they were," said LaPenta Thursday night while preparing to travel to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to attend a memorial service for 40 people - Guadagno - who died when United Flight 93 crashed in a field there.
For those who knew him, Guadagno lives in the things he loved: the flock of Aleutian geese glide on Humboldt Bay, sunlight early in the morning reflecting on the waters of the swamp, he so loved and leg sandy footprints left by the dogs scampering around the many beaches of the North Coast.
For LaPenta, that's where the focus should be - on remembrance and celebration, to live in a way that would celebrate the legacy of Guadagno.
When it comes to Guadagno, LaPenta is always a difficult time speaking Tuesday in September 2001. Even though she's told the story countless times, detailing where she was when she got the news, it's still raw and painful.
She prefers to talk about Guadagno and how over 18 wonderful months their lives intertwined.
The story starts with a personal ad, though Guadagno was sometimes reticent to admit it. Both were relatively new to the area, with Guadagno having come from Oregon to run the refuge and LaPenta having arrived to teach biology at College of the Redwoods. They met online through Yahoo Personals.
