Damascus offense too much for Wootton

On paper, perennial plant of Damascus High School football teams win at home 49-12 on Thomas S. Wootton should have been closer.

Consider the Swarmin Hornets (3-0) offense struggled to produce 26 points against two junior while the Patriots (1-2) scored 60 of their first two games this fall.

But as the saying goes, anything can happen on any night.

And Friday, offense finally clicked in Damascus while Wootton faltered under the pressure of the line Swarmin Hornets more defensive.

It was a huge game for us, a real confidence boost, Damascus junior wide receiver Zach Bradshaw said. Everyone talked about how this would be a close game. Many people thought that [Wootton] was going to beat us because they had [one of the best] offenses in the region.

Bradshaws offensive role has changed at the beginning of the fall. Hes not working as many routes Swarmin Hornets are run-first this year, but hes still a clutch playmaker to Damascus.

The 6 feet 3 inches, 205 pounds, opened the game with a punt return of 85 yards for a touchdown and caught four passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns. It was also a factor on defense Friday.

Hornets sophomore Swarmin quart Chase Williams completed five of 12 pass attempts for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back Trevor Patton led the ground game with 213 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

We have a great back [offensive] line and a great race, Bradshaw said. We have seen some weaknesses in the defense [Wootton] and we took advantage. Im fine [not having as many keys] as long as earned. Be that as it takes to win.

Wootton together some nice work to relax with Damascus early on Friday. But the Patriots could not stand.

Quarterback Chris Papadopoulos completed 22 of 38 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. Curt Brooks caught two of touchdown passes, he finished with six catches for 72 yards. Joe Kelly had seven catches for 90 yards.

It takes a special talent to try to replace All-American back on. Brian Lucas, a 19-year rookie running back from Damascus, Maryland, took up the challenge.
"It's almost a mission impossible," said Lucas on the replacement UMD legend Isaac Odim. "It is certainly not easy."
Lucas transferred from the spring UMD West Point Prep in New Jersey with the intention to work hard to fill the shoes of running backs who left after last season.
Lucas played in the preparation of West Point as a linebacker, running back and punter in all 10 games during their 2010 season. Before playing with the football program USMAPS, Lucas attended Damascus High School where he was a year his junior and senior running back.
"The first time I even played football was my first year of high school," said Lucas. "I started on my game Varsity third parties. We went to the state championship that first year."
Lucas in the middle of 2010 season at West Point Prep, he was moved to the line Backer, a change that was not ideal for him.
"I had my dad send a bunch of highlight tapes with bios," said Lucas. "He sent around about 10 schools about five D1 and D2 schools."
UMD was one of the schools that received a tape.
"I was about to go into a meeting and my phone rings. I answer and hear, 'This is Wiese coach of the University of Minnesota in Duluth, do you have a minute? "Said Lucas." My face just lit, I was so excited. In fact, I could not not speak for him that minute, but I asked if we could talk later that night. "
Official visit of Lucas was the weekend after winning the national championship.
"I came here when there was a snowstorm. It was very cold," said Lucas. "I could barely find on a map of Minnesota, I had no idea what it was like here."
Senior co-captain Cory Flesch showed Lucas UMD and around the city of Duluth. Even with the blizzard and sub-zero temperatures, the native of the East Coast decided to commit to the Bulldogs.
