Brentwood Police Dept. seeks to renew accreditation
Whether by phone, by mail or in person, a law enforcement accreditation team looking into the Brentwood Police Department wants to hear from you.
Assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. are taking public comments on the departments policies, procedures, management, operations and support services.
Brentwood received its first accreditation status in November 1989 and has never looked back. It has since achieved re-accreditation five times, most recently in 2008.
This makes the Brentwood Police Department the most tenured accredited agency in the state, said Assistant Chief Jeff Hughes.
Each accreditation cycle lasts three years.
The Brentwood Police Department has participated in the accreditation process, which is strictly voluntary, for several reasons, said Chief Ricky Watson.
By complying with the accreditation standards, the likelihood of civil litigation has been greatly reduced, personnel have specific written guidelines to follow and we can deliver the level of law enforcement services the citizens of the city of Brentwood deserve, he stated.
To earn accreditation, the applying agency must comply with all mandatory standards set forth for agencies of its size and function and at least 80 percent of all other mandatory standards.
A public information session will begin at 7 p.m. today in the Brentwood Municipal Center, at 5211 Maryland Way. Those unable to attend can call 615-371-0160 and ask for ext. 261 from 1 to 3 p.m. today.
Comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address Brentwoods ability to comply with standards set by the commission. Copies of these standards are available at the police department or by calling Hughes at 615-371-2266.
Written comments should go to CALEA, 13575 Heathcote Blvd., Suite 320, Gainesville, Va., 20155. Write to the attention of Dennis Hyater.
David D. Belmonte and Phillip S. Kasten, police officials from out of state, will review written material, interview people and visit the Brentwood offices as part of an onsite review this week.
