Banco de Crédito del Perú CIO discusses his job
We interviewed Ricardo Bustamante, CIO of Banco de Crédito del Perú, the largest bank in Perú, about what it means to be a CIO in Perú. An excerpt of the interview follows.
CIO: What characteristics must someone have to be a CIO?
Bustamante: I think that if we are looking for a definition of chief information officer we could find a different one in each company since the level of maturity of this position is not that of a chief financial officer or that of an accountant, etcetera. But there still are some clear characteristics that could be highlighted.
The first one of them is related to the daily operations management. The CIO is the one in charge of making things work well. The second one is related to innovation inside the company -- the CIO must be a change agent, make business units take innovative actions and generate seeds for the creation of a virtuous circle
of innovation, according to the resources and boundaries of the organization.
A third one is related, in realistic terms, with the formulation of an IT strategy inside the company. The CIO must recognize execution risks.
CIO: The CIO is getting away from operations?
Bustamante: In fact, when I told you that the CIO is in charge of making things work well I meant the operations. In my case, the bank has to open its offices every day, and in this case if there is no technology there is no bank; it is a very operational topic.
So a CIO must have a clear understanding of technical, and operational concepts, and the way the architecture is structured in the organization, in order to improve the architecture and to know how things work. In fact, a CIO does not have to be a tech guru, but it is good for him to have the skills to appeal to people that do have a deep knowledge of technology.
CIO: Given the title 'chief information officer,' the role sounds like someone who works with information rather than systems. Is it the case in Perú?
