Turkey's Sacred Ruins
Turkey's Sacred Ruins

Originally called Daphne, now rather touristically called Apollo's Tears, the place's mysterious tingling power can still be felt there today. Cascades shower down beside charming cafés with chairs around, and even in, the water.

Greek Beasts and Heroes: The Monster in the Maze by Lucy Coats - review

My favourite story in the book was called 'The Girl Who Grew Into A Bay Tree' – it's about Daphne, the river god's daughter who is turned into a tree by Apollo. I thought that Lucy Coats' version of the Minotaur in the maze was a bit short,

Ukrainian Use of Fresh Wraiths - uncensor-team.com

Fresh wreaths are a symbol of beauty and purity and are often seen adorning the head of nymphs in artworks and paintings. The use of fresh wreaths has been in practice through the early times of history and its use has continued up to the modern era. The wreaths are fashioned in such a shape that it has tremendous value as a symbol and are closely intertwined with the rite of Christian weddings as it symbolizes everlasting beauty and peace along with eternal bond. This is the primary reason why fresh wreaths are often found decorating the head of the bride in Christian weddings as it represents the bride’s purity and depicts the bride’s determination and resolve in forging an everlasting bond with her husband. The main reason why Christian weddings use the wreath most often is because the wreath also carries religious values to the followers of the Christian Church and depicts the most celebrated event in the Christian religion, the coming of the lord and savior Jesus Christ.

The wreath, although commonly attributed to the Christians, is used among other cultures as well, like the Ukrainians who use fresh wreaths to celebrate the purity of young women and the ritual of her passage into womanhood. This act is performed in a large gathering near a lake or river where young women would throw their vinoks into the water and see the vinok’s action which will foretell their love life. This act is followed by the eligible young men jumping into the river and attempting to retrieve the vinok of the girl they would like to get married to and if successful will gain the right to do so.

This is an event which was originated from the pagan ritual of summer solstice which was a ritual celebrating fertility and the coming of summer and was usually carried out in the longest day of summer. Other than the pagan ritual, the uses of fresh wreaths are often found adorning the head of environmentalists who fight to protect the beauty of nature and to preserve the variations of life in the planet which we all inhabit. The wreath is important to their cause because it is a decorative ornament which can be made using all natural ingredients and no industrial apparatus.
