Janice Ann's Journal: Paying tribute to Annon Card

Honor Guard for the naval service internment Annon Card was principal chief Wrayman Harris, Petty Officer 1st Class John Brown and the Master Chief Larry Harper. They are in the Naval Reserve and the arrival of Tyler and Marshall to attend the service. Gay Ricky played taps as they folded the flag and gave it to Michael Card.

Annon lived a life like no one else could. His career began with his association with legendary coach Abe Martin in 1936. He was the team captain and the team won the first bi-district championship in Lufkin. There is a Lufkin Panther flag that commemorates their victory, and it flew at half-staff at the high school the day of Annon’s funeral. It will be retired since he is the last of the team to pass away. Carol Card Hill, her daughter Annie and Chad Martin took down the 1936 Panther Flag, and it will be retired to the wall at LHS.

From high school he attended the College of Marshall for two years on a football scholarship. I loved to hear him tell of his friend, Hoover Jones, who was offered a football scholarship, and Hoover said he would not play unless they gave Annon one also. Annon was 120 lbs. and had played center on the 1936 team. He got the scholarship and from there went to the University of Texas, where he graduated in 1941. He enlisted in the Navy, and after pilot training he was commissioned as an ensign.

Annon and Fran Card were married in 1946 and he was discharged from the Navy in 1947. There were stories of their leaving their wedding in a “borrowed” airplane. In 1947 he was honorably discharged from the Navy in Corpus Christi and started working for Texaco in their sales training program. He always told me that he traveled checking the rest rooms of the Texaco stations.

He had a “sparkle” program and I drove him crazy with my messy ways. I worked almost 19 years for him at the Lufkin High School Alumni Association and joked that we never killed each other over anything. There are many tales and wonderful memories that we all have of the Card family. It was when he retired in 1983 and returned to Lufkin that he had the idea of the LHS Alumni Association, which he founded in 1985. Last year the alumni association celebrated our 25th year and he was on the football field with his “L” held high singing the LHS school song with Roy Knight and Glen Arnold. That is a picture that I will always remember.
