Lawmakers dueling over proposed Alaska gold mine
In a high-stakes battle that pits the gold and copper against fish, members of Congress are on a demolition plan to build one of the world's largest open pit mines in southwestern Alaska. </ P> fearing that toxic waste from the mine could affect the wild salmon population in his home state of Washington Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell plans to enter the fray Monday. It plans to ask the Head of the Agency of Environmental Protection to consider the use of the Clean Water Act - if necessary - to stop the proposed Pebble Mine proposed Bristol Bay.</ P>
Cantwell, a senator of the second term and a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee of the Senate, will become the first senator to issue such a call. She will face Republican opposition in Alaska Rep. Don Young, already introduced a bill which would deprive EPA of its authority to stop the project. </ P> While the supporters are excited about the potential of the mine to create thousands of jobs, environmental groups and other critics fear that the project would have a devastating impact on wildlife, including seals, caribou , moose, grizzly bears and migratory birds.Bay nearly half of annual supplies in the world harvest of sockeye salmon. </ P>
Opponents of the mine said it could dump up to 10 billion tons of toxic waste in the heart of the watershed of Bristol Bay. And they say the sheer scale of the project - up to two miles wide and 1700 meters -. Would be certain to hurt the animals that depend on habitat </ p>
Cantwell made his request that the EPA is conducting a scientific analysis of the proposed mine to be published this fall.</ P> If successful, it will help thwart a project which could lead to the extraction of more than 107 million ounces of gold and 80 billion pounds of copper from a site of 150 square mile, an area as large as the city of Chattanooga, Tenn. </ p> In a draft of a letter she has sent to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Cantwell said she was contacted by Thousands of residents of Washington who expressed concern about the "potentially catastrophic and widespread long-term impact" of the mine, which she described as "the world's largest man-of excavation."</ P> The mine would be to capitalize on one of the world's greatest concentrations of gold, copper, silver and molybdenum, a mineral that is mixed with steel to provide strength heat, among other things. The project is proposed by the Pebble Partnership, which includes Northern Dynasty Minerals and mining giant Anglo American. </ P> With the mine requiring permits of at least 67 state and federal agencies, officials say that the partnership would be environmentally responsible and carefully considered before the metals are extracted.According to its website, the partnership will ensure "that all areas disturbed by mining are returned to their full capacity and utility." </ P> </ p> mine triggered a fierce advertising campaign in Alaska as local residents prepare to vote on this project in October. Last month, the Supreme Court of Alaska approved a ballot initiative that would restrict to any major project that could affect the migration of salmon.</ P> In his letter, Cantwell said that the wild salmon populations throughout the world are already "disappearing at an alarming rate" and that Bristol Bay was one of the few remaining habitats of salmon underdeveloped. </ P> And she said the problem is particularly crucial to the economy of Washington State, with the Bristol Bay providing $ 113 million a year for its commercial fishing. </ P> "Nearly a thousand Washingtonians licensed commercial fishing in Bristol Bay, supporting thousands of fishing jobs in my state," Cantwell said in the letter.</ P> </ p> Opponents of the plan
Cantwell want to ensure that EPA does not seek to use the Clean Water Act to stop the mine. </ P> "Projects in Alaska and across the country were closed or delayed time and again by the EPA, which only serves as an extension of the position of the administration of anti-development resources," Young, a member of the House Committee of Natural Resources, said when he introduced his legislation in January.</ P> </ p>
Cantwell is welcoming review of the EPA, saying it will be crucial "to have a process based on independent science assessment of potential risks" of the mine. </ P>
"If scientists determine that pollution from a large-scale development in the basin of the Bristol Bay could have unacceptable negative impacts on water quality and stocks fish that depend on it, I would support efforts to prohibit or restrict appropriately to these activities, "including using the Clean Water Act, Cantwell wrote in his letter.</ P> conservation
many individuals and environmental groups including the Sierra Club and Trout Unlimited, oppose the project, as well. </ P> Last week, they got a boost of 17 restaurants in Seattle that marked a "Dine for Bristol Bay" campaign, serving as Alaskan salmon and contribute a portion of the proceeds of the week towards efforts to stop the mine.Gold News - News

The center of gravity of the demand for gold moves still further, which means that all Western institutions (and I use that term in its broadest sense) can do to stop his escape that enthusiastic 'they are doomed to failure. The Chinese, Indians and other investors from the East who are psychologically hard currency in gold as the ultimate survival when times are bad - a factor that also affects their attitudes to government gold - call the tune and any sales Western madness has rapidly causes a reaction purchase even stronger in the East.
Silver continues to be dragged coattails of gold, and given the much smaller market here, we may see more volatility - although it was interesting to note the resilience of money over the last Gold prices down occasional strong each time an obstacle in its path is driven forward.
Another boost to the money is also an indirect consequence of the strength of gold. More and more small investors who want insurance against the precious metals is a difficult time coming to be out of the purchase price of gold - then money becomes a real alternative.Do not be surprised to see the demand for money continues to grow strongly, particularly in emerging markets as at least some growth here, see more and more part of the middle class - and the aspirations of the middle class in many of these countries include holding precious metals against a rainy day.
It is also becoming more apparent - thanks in part to the changing demands mentioned above - that anything truly speculative gold (and silver) the purchase is probably relatively minor in its impact and demand for precious metals from key holders who sell them as a last resort - do not make money quickly.
