Lawmakers dueling over proposed Alaska gold mine

In a high-stakes battle that pits the gold and copper against fish, members of Congress are on a demolition plan to build one of the world's largest open pit mines in southwestern Alaska. </ P> fearing that toxic waste from the mine could affect the wild salmon population in his home state of Washington Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell plans to enter the fray Monday. It plans to ask the Head of the Agency of Environmental Protection to consider the use of the Clean Water Act - if necessary - to stop the proposed Pebble Mine proposed Bristol Bay.</ P> <p> Cantwell, a senator of the second term and a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee of the Senate, will become the first senator to issue such a call.
